BrightFish Expands with Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary

Chicago and Ottawa, August 24, 2018 – BrightFish Learning, publisher of reading intervention and assessment tools, today announced integration with Merriam-Webster's online dictionary engine to help struggling readers in grades 2-8 develop their vocabulary skills. The highly respected online dictionary brings the expertise of a large team of editors and writers, along with the company’s trusted pedigree from more than 150 years as a leading provider of language information.

“Below-level readers typically have underdeveloped word knowledge, which compounds their difficulties in both vocabulary and comprehension,” says Ravi Ramsaran, VP of product development for BrightFish Learning. “Merriam-Webster’s online dictionaries provide essential grade-appropriate support in BrightFish Reading, giving our students access to the best tools to develop and expand their vocabulary skills.”

Students in grades 2-5 can use Merriam-Webster’s Elementary Dictionary for assistance with synonym/antonym graphic organizers and word usage activities. Read-aloud options provide modeled fluent readings of the words and their definitions. Middle school students will be able to draw on grade-appropriate definitions from the Intermediate Dictionary for word usage activities in vocabulary and comprehension.

Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary is available for BrightFish Reading as part of the standard subscription license.
